There are always a lot of things to consider when adopting a new pet. Size, temperament, training etc. I would always recommend adopting from a reputable animal shelter. There are so many benefits of adopting from a shelter that range from ownership support services that most shelters and rescues offer to the fact in all probability the dog is already trained and house broken. You’ll also have a great feeling that you really saved a life.

According the the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA)  a total of ten million pets will arrive at animal shelters and animal rescue organizations in the U.S. this year. So you really have your pick when it comes to adopting the perfect shelter dog or cat.

Finding a Lost Dog Is A Daunting Task

Tuesday, November 17, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Loosing a pet can be one of the most stressful experience that one can experience. We have a tendency to panic and don’t know what to do first. Here are ten quick tips. Print this blog out and keep it handy in case your dog gets lost.

1. Don’t waste time!  In the first two hours, get as many people as you can involved in your search. Ask any family, friends and any neighbor you see to search around town and up to a three-mile radius of the location where the dog was last seen.

2. Search  the neighborhood by foot. Create flyers to hand out and/or staple to telephone poles so that your information is readily available and easy to share. Put a photo (preferably color) of your dog on these cards or print out some images of your dog separately to accompany your information cards. Give these cards to anyone you encounter during this first search.

3.   Bring along your dog’s favorite toy of some other noise that he is familiar with. This will make him come when he hears it.

4.  Bring along another friendly dog companion if possible.

5. While you’re out searching, have someone else make phone calls to your local Humane Society, animal shelters, rescues, vets, and police departments.

6. Create an ad with a recent picture of your dog. Describe the dog so that an average person would recognize him/her if they saw the dog. Include identifying information about him/her like his collar, dog tags, tattoo, identifying features like scars or unusual coloration or microchip ID number.

7. Intensify the search after your dog has been missing for 24 hours. Make at least 200 photocopies of your ad.  Start posting them on bulletin boards, super markets, telephone poles and in other highly visible areas.

8. Take “found” calls with a grain of salt. There could be some unethical people trying to take advantage. Ask key questions but don’t waste your time if you’re not getting anywhere.

9. After two days, extend your search.

  • Go a little further by vehicle and start spreading the word to local mail carriers, UPS and Fed Ex drivers, joggers, runners, bikers and anyone else walking around the search areas.
  • Continue using strong ad messages to spread and expand your search.
  • Expand the radius of your search area by several miles. Call shelters even beyond the area you think your dog could have reached.
  • Visit the animal shelters and rescue leagues to look for your pet every other day. Don’t expect volunteers to recognize one brown dog from another. If the dog is a dirty, matted mess that lost weight, you may have trouble identifying your own pet. Ask if there is a quarantine area or an area where injured animals are kept in case your dog is separated from those shown to the public.
  • Check the “found” ads in they newspaper each day your pet is lost.
  • Check online databases of lost and found dogs.

10. Stay positive. Dogs have been reunited with their owners even after a year or more.DOG FOUND

The Pros and Cons of Automatic Pet Feeders

Monday, November 16, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

You may have seen automatic pet feeders in the store and wondered why anyone would want one. There are several good reasons for owning one.

Cats associate their owners with food and this association could be very annoying because cats demand food anytime when hungry or not so hungry. This can be really be a problem to some owners who don’t want to be woken up at 4:00 am because their cat is meowing and wants to be fed.

Automatic feeders allow you to feed your pet without you being present and this means a lot when you’re away. Another good reason for choosing an automatic pet feeder is that some cats eat all their food at once. If you’re away at work, the automatic pet feeder will dispense food in small portions throughout the day. Of course, if you feed your can strictly wet cat food, this device will not be practical.

Now my take is that if you own a cat, it’s always a good idea to add wet food to his diet. An automatic feeder is great if you’re going to be away for a couple of days but when you’re home, I wouldn’t only depend on this type of feeder. Each cat has different needs and so always need to keep a close watch how how much you cats eats. Especially if he has been diagnosed with a particular disease.

Dogs will Also Occupy the White House Once Again

Saturday, November 14, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

For the past four years, there have been no dogs in the White House. Why? Because President Trump isn’t into dogs. Are you surprised? Donald Trump isn’t into anything or anyone except Donald Trump. Well that all changes in two months or so when The Biden’s are residents of the White House.

USA today Reports the following.

The Bidens adopted Major two years ago.

Major is from a litter of six other German shepherd puppies, who were given “life-saving medical care” after exposure to “something toxic in their home,” a Delaware Humane Association news release said at the time of adoption in 2018.

Major fostered with the Bidens before being adopted to join his pup-brother, Champ.

“We are so happy to welcome Major to the Biden family, and we are grateful to the Delaware Humane Association for their work in finding forever homes for Major and countless other animals,” Biden told CNN in 2018. (Biden has owned at least three other German Shepherds and had a Great Dane named Governor.)

President-elect Joe Biden will be ushering in two new first dogs when he makes his move to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. The White House (and America) has been without presidential dogs since 2016 when President Donald Trump became the first president without a dog in decades.

German shepherds Major and Champ will be accompanying the Biden family to their new residence. The Biden grandchildren gave 12-year-old Champ, who joined the family in 2008, the name Biden Sr. often used as an endearment.

A Cats Fascination with Boxes

Friday, November 13, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Anytime I buy something new, I leave the box around the house for a few days. My cats love boxes. They sit in them, play in them and claim them by rubbing their scent on them. Why do cats love boxes so much? There are a few reasons.

  1. They like the security of an enclosed space. A box resembles a cave and may make your cat feel secure knowing they are protected and, theoretically, cannot be attacked from behind.
  2. Boxes are fun! Lots of cats seem especially playful in and around boxes. Cats enjoy jumping in and out of a box, pouncing, stalking and climbing atop boxes.
  3. Boxes are cozy. Try putting a soft blanket in the bottom of your cat’s favorite box. The sides help retain the cat’s body heat making him nice and cozy. Careful though, he may not want you to throw his new bed away!
  4. It’s instinctive.  Cats seem to instinctively prefer smaller, more confined spaces.

So hang onto that box for a few more days and keep your feline friend happy!

Care For Geriatric Pets

Thursday, November 12, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

As our pets get older, they will require more medical care just like we do. Pay attention to your pet as he gets older.  You should take him for a basic physical exam every six months. Check any changes to your pets appetite, thrust, urination and defecation habits. Does your pet vomit or have diarrhea? Is he sleeping more than usual? Is he coughing or does he show sign of exercise intolerance?  Normally, as pets age, they may sleep more but it can also be due to a variety of other things like arthritis, heart disease or even cancer. These conditions can be treated if diagnosed early. This is why it’s important to take your aging pet for regular checkups. As a general rule, take pets that are over the age of eight for a physical exam every six months and blood work once a year. If you notice a symptom such as weakness or vomiting, get your pet in for a checkup right away.

Can Chronic Feline Kidney Disease be Reversed?

Wednesday, November 11, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Many older cats are prone to Chronic Renal Failure or CRF. As a cat ages, their kidneys become compromised. There is really no explanation why this happens to some cats an not others. It could be genetic, diet or a combination of both. I have two cats that are approximately the same age. My cat Atlantis has mild kidney disease as does show some symptoms like loss of weight, loss of appetite and vomiting,  yet my cat Millie doesn’t have this condition.  My previous cat Molly passed away from kidney disease a few years ago. I had Molly and Millie at the same time and fed them the same diet, Molliy came down with CRF at the age of 14 and Millie did not.

Is there anything that can be done to reverse this condition? The answer is no but there is some positive news. The disease can be slowed. How? you may ask. Some vets recommend various treatments, like hydration therapy and renal diets. I would always recommend adding Astro’s Oil products to your cats daily regimen.

I remember that I would do anything to preserve my beloved cat Molly’s life. One day, I was meeting someone at the beach and got there early. I sat in my car and tried to look up something, anything that would help Molly with this serious condition. I came across a page that recommended Astro’s Oil. I immediately went to the website www.Astrosoil.com and read the story behind this product. A doctor developed it for his cat, Astro who was suffering from Chronic Renal Failure. The results were remarkable!  Astro gained weight, his appetite increased and he was returning to his “old self.” I decided to purchase Astros Oil for my cat Molly. After administering Astro’s Oil for about a week, I noticed a change. Molly began eating more regularly, she started to gain some weight, her coat became more shiny and she seemed more active. I continued giving Molly Astro’s oil for the next five years. I never switched her diet to a renal diet (many cats don’t like it) and I was able to enjoy five more quality years with my cat Molly.

We’ve spoken about kidney disease many times. I recommend that as your cat ages, pay close attention to your cats appetite, coat, weight and overall health. If you notice any changes get her to a vet and start adding Astro’s Oil. You can read all about the benefits of this product by going to their website: www.astrosoil.com. I think you will be pleased with the results.

How To Recognize if Your Pet Is Choking

Tuesday, November 10, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Just as humans, our pets could swallow too fast or get something lodged in their throat. If your pet is choking how do you know? Here are symptoms to look for:

Symptoms: difficulty breathing, excessive pawing at the mouth, choking sounds when breathing or coughing, blue-tinged lips/tongue. Always proceed with caution, a pet that is choking is likely to bite in it’s panic. If your pet still can breathe, try to keep it calm and get him to a veterinarian right away. Look into your pets mouth and see if the object is visible. If you do see the object, gently try to remove it with a pliers or  a tweezer. Be very careful not to push the object further down. Don’t spent too much time trying to remove the object. If you can’t remove it right away, proceed in getting your pet to the vet. If you can’t remove the object or your pet collapses, place both hands on the side of your pet’s rib cage and apply firm quick pressure, or lay your pet on its side and strike the rib cage firmly with the palm of your hand 3-4 times.  You want to push the object out. Keep repeating this until the object is dislodged or until you arrive at the vet.

Remember, your pets count!

Astro’s Oil products are great to use for cats diagnosed with Chronic kidney disease. The should be added to your cat’s diet and regimen everyday to prolong life and life quality. All of the information you would need is on their website: www.astrosoil.com.

Checking Your Dogs Vital Signs

Monday, November 9, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

There are particular vital signs to look for if you suspect that your dog is sick. Make sure that you write these things down so that you can show them to your vet.

Temperature –  A normal temperature for a dog is between 100.5 and 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t check his temperature right after exercise or right after he wakes up. Results will not be accurate.

Gums – Gums should be pink in color and moist and slick to the touch. There’s a problem if they are pale, sticky or dry.

Heart Rate –Young puppies and small toy dogs will have a fast heart rate, averaging around 180 beats per minute. Medium and large dogs will have a heart rate – between 60-160 beats per minute. The larger the dog, the slower the normal heart rate.

Pulse – Take the pulse in the extremities. A dog’s pulse should be slightly slower that his heart rate. 60 beats per minute for a large dog and 120 bears per minute for a small dog.

Respiration – Small dogs will have a faster respiration rate around 30 breaths per minute and larger dogs will have a slower rate of respiration around 10 breaths per minute.

Dehyration –  If the dog bowl remains full, your dog may not be drinking enough .Check a dog for dehydration by pinching the skin at the dog’s scruff. Pull the skin upwards into a “tent” and then release. In a dehydrated dog, the skin will take several seconds to return to normal. The longer it takes the dog’s skin to return to normal, the more dehydrated the dog is. Dry gums are also a sign of dehydration.

If your dog stops eating is dog food and is not drinking, and  is spending an abnormal amount of time sleeping in his dog bed, these can be  signs that your dog is not well and must be seen by a vet as soon as possible.

Remember, your pets count!

Don’t Underestimate Your Cats Intelligence

Sunday, November 8, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

Do you know how smart your cat is? One way to test his intelligence is to look at his ability to discern object permanence. This is a test that was designed to test cognitive development in children but you can apply it to cats as well.

Show your cat an object in plain view such as a toy. Then hide the toy by placing a solid object in front of it like a file folder. If your cat looks behind the object for the toy rather than thinking that it just disappeared, he can be ranked with the intelligence of an 18 month old child. This is pretty good!

Super smart cats are capable of thinking like a two year old child. They will be able to follow the trajectory of an object that moves out of view. In other words if a live mouse runs under your sofa, your cat should be able to predict where he will come out and pounce on it as it reappears.

Don’t underestimate the intelligence of your cat.
