You get a new puppy and seemed overwhelmed and are trying to decide what command to teach him first. The “come” command in my opinion is one of the most important. So what is the best way to teach this command?  Pawdiet.com outlines an effective way to teach this command.

Coming when called is an essential skill for a well-trained dog, and it’s often the easiest command to teach. Stand a few feet away from your dog, and, in a pleasant voice, say, “Come, Fido” or “Come here, boy.” Reward correct behavior with praise or a treat. Gradually build up to longer distances and make sure the dog will obey even without a food reward.

This command is especially helpful if your dog slips his leash or dashes out the open front door into the yard or the street. It’s the most important command for ensuring your pet’s safety.

Eventually try to practice this command even when a major distraction (another person, a cat, a squirrel, loud noises) is competing for your dog’s attention. If he comes to you even when his attention is drawn toward something else, you know he has reliably learned this command.

Before you bring a new puppy home, you should prepare your house. Young dogs seem to get into anything and everything within reach. If you’re not prepared, their curiosity could prove dangerous. Start by looking at your house the way dog would see it. Look down low for items that could be hazardous such as trash, electrical wires or sharp objects. Make sure that you keep pesticides, chemicals, medicines and anti freeze out of reach.  The best idea is to store these dangerous items in a locked cabinet.  Some houseplants can also prove poisonous to pets so keep them up high.  Remember, no matter how well that you think you puppy proofed your home,  you still need to watch your new dog every carefully.

It is difficult to get  of our furry friends to take a pill. You coax and coax and coax but still no luck. You can use a pill pocket, a tasty treat where you hide the pill inside. My cat Mollie was a smart one, she eventually knew that there was a pill in there so she would eat around the pill. I frequently found pills on the floor but the tasty pill pocket was gone.

So what can we do if our cat refuses to take a pill?  When my cat Atlantis got very sick at the beginning of this year and refused to take his medication, our vet recommended  transdermal medication. This medication comes in a plastic cylinder. It’s measured out by twisting the bottom of the cylinder twice. and just enough medication comes out in the form of a cream. The medication is applied by rubbing it in your cats ear. It’s quick and simple and very easy to administer.

There are some drawbacks. Usually this medication has to be made up at a pharmacy and lots of pharmacies don’t prepare it. It is also much more expensive. I’ve been giving Atlantis this medication but I must say it really hits your pocket book! Check with your vet and discuss the possibility of transdermal medication for your pet.

Did you now that over 40,000 pets perish each year because of house fires and other disasters such as floods or hurricanes?  Cats run and hide very easily and this makes them difficult to locate them in the event of a fire or quick evacuation. I would recommend that you keep their pet carrier close at hand and close to the door. At least you won’t have to worry about searching for it if you need to get out in a hurry. Don’t spend too much time, I know this is difficult, but in the event of a fire, every second counts! If you can’t find you cat, leave it to the experts, just get out fast.

You should let rescuers know that there is a cat inside that needs to be rescued. Do this by purchasing decals that say “In case of a fire, please rescue cat.” Put them in a few prominent places and keep them there at all times.  Having a decal on the door or windows will let firefighters or police know right away that there is a pet inside that needs help!  These few seconds could mean life or death of a pet member.

Always have a plan that includes the rescuing of your pet in the event of a fire or other disaster.

Keeping your kitty litter clean is essential for sanitary reasons and health reasons. Cats are clean creatures and may not venture into a dirty litter box. Kitty litter should be cleaned at least once a week and scooped every day. There are many different kinds of kitty litter. Personally, I prefer a brand named “The World’s Best Litter” because it’s flushable. You can scoop both poop and pee and flush it down the toilet. This keeps the litter cleaner longer.

When cleaning out the litter box, use hot water and a little dish detergent. Stay away from cleaners, bleach or ammonia as these can be toxic.

It’s best not to use anything scented in the box, or even in the same room as the box, since chemical smells, even the kinds of things that smell good to us, can repel cats and cause them to avoid the box or the room. Some scented products can be toxic for cats just through inhaling them in the indoor environment, so the best method is to neutralize and remove the odors rather than try to cover them up.

Finally, if you have more than one cat, many owners have found that having multiple litter boxes—one per cat—is the best method for preventing, or ending, turf wars. Likewise, if you live in a home with multiple levels, one litter box per level will make a big difference for a cat that has to go now.

Just don’t forget to clean all of the litter boxes in the house on a regular basis.
