What Ingredients To Avoid When Buying Cat Food

Monday, October 12, 2020
posted by Jim Murphy

It’s very important to feed your feline friend the healthiest food. My motto is that if the food is cheap, the quality is poor. It can be a daunting task to determine what foods are best.  Here are some ingredients that you should avoid when buying cat food.

Avoid products with any of the following: Top 10 Best Cat Foods [2020 Buyer's Guide For Dry & Wet] 21

  • Artificial colors and flavors, including Blue 2, Red 40, Yellow 5, or caramel coloring
  • Artificial or synthetic preservatives, including BHA, BHT, and ethoxyquin
  • Corn
  • Wheat
  • Soy
  • Sugar
  • Anything labeled as a “by-product” (after all, a by-product of what exactly?)
  • Any vague or nondescript “meat” (if the source is not identified, there’s no way to know where it came from or what’s in it)
  • Rendered fat (this can promote bacteria and mold growth)
  • Carrageenan
  • Vitamin 3K
  • Sodium Nitrate
  • Sodium Nitrite
