Renal failure is the main killer of our feline friends and as cats age, the changes of developing this disease increases. In fact most cats will develop some form of kidney disease in their lifetime. There are two types of kidney disease, acute and chronic.

Acute kidney disease occurs when there is a sudden shutdown of the kidneys. This is usually due to ingesting a toxin such as anti freeze. Anti freeze has a sweet smell and is enticing to cats and dogs. If your pet has ingested anti-freeze, do not wait, get him to the vet immediately.  If treated immediately and aggressively, your can can make a full recovery.

Chronic kidney disease is a slowly progressive disease that usually affects cats as they age. It could be a result of genetics, infection or even environment. My 15 year old cat Millie has no signs of kidney disease while my cat Atlantis who’s the same age has kidney disease and does have some symptoms.  We’ve discussed various treatments in past posts but I will say, if you start treatment as quickly as possible, the disease will not disappear but could be slowed down significantly.

He has a great appetite, is gaining weight and his overall health is better. We take it a day at a time and don’t take this disease for granted but any extra, quality time with your pet is precious!
