Can I Share Your Water Bowl?

Friday, April 14, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

dogwatertwoDogs like to have their own dog food bowls, but do you really need more than one water bowl for more than one dog? What about the germs in each dog’s mouth? Just like humans, dogs have a lot of bacteria in their saliva. Lets not call them all germs because many bacteria serve a useful purpose. Bad bacteria usually gets zapped by acid in the dogs stomach when it swallows. Some diseases that dogs pass along are respiratory. Some are transmitted by fecal contaminants. Dogs with healthy immune systems can safely share one water bowl. Just make sure that you keep plenty of water around. Adult dogs are 60% water and it should stay that way.

Puppy Vet Visits

Monday, April 10, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

puppys-firstvet-visitIf you adopt a pet and he is up to date on his shots and has been spayed or neutered, you still want to take him for his first visit to the vet within a few days. This enables the veterinarian to give him a checkup, set up a schedule for his future vaccinations and begin a record of his care. Your vet may want to run some blood tests and do a fecal exam.

After the first visit, you will have a schedule for future vaccinations and boosters. Make sure that you adhere to this schedule because vaccinations are important, especially when your puppy is young. If your puppy has not been spayed or neutered by the time he reaches 6 months, you really need to get this done. This involves surgery and an overnight stay at the vets office and usually a follow up visit.

Young dogs should visit the vet at least once a year, older dogs, twice a year. Make sure that you keep up with your vet visits to keep ahead of any potential problems.

Remember, your pets count!

Keep Your Pets Carrier Clean

Sunday, April 9, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

dogincrateIn order to prevent disease or infection, it is very important that you keep your dog or cat carrier clean. Clean your pets crate on a regular basis. You can use mild soap and water or an eco-friendly product that won’t linger. Dog  and cat health problems can arise if they lick or inhale chemicals.

Never share your pets crate with other pets. They can pick up kennel cough, an infection, or parasites. A sick dog or cat can spread germs quickly and a  crate is the perfect breeding ground. Also, never let your pets share water with other pets. Always keep your pets crate and safe.

Calming Cats

Saturday, April 8, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

catsnugglepwnerRight now, as I’m typing this blog, my cat Molly is sitting right beside me purring and enjoying the peace and quiet. I’m feeling calm and secure with my little friend next to me. Cats have a way of creating a peaceful, serene environment. They are low key and enjoy a warm place to snuggle. Throughout the years, my two little friends have provided me with lots of comfort. They were there during my ups and downs and have seen me at my worst yet they still always have the ability to help me relax. It could be their soothing purr or the fact that they take my mind off of the nonsense and focus on more simple, peaceful thoughts.  Dogs are wonderful, loyal companions but they don’t provide the peace and serenity of  a cat. If you’re a cat owner, you know what I mean. Enjoy the calm!

Remember, your pets count!

We Can’t Always Tell How Our Pets Are Feeling

Wednesday, April 5, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

petillOur pets can’t tell us how they’re feeling. We need to know when our pets are ill and not ignore important, sometimes life threatening symptoms. Here is a quick checklist. If your pet has any unexplained symptoms such as the ones listed below, get him to a vet or animal hospital immediately. It’s always better to be on the safe side and get things checked out fast. Many animal hospitals and clinics are open 24 hours. It’s a good idea to check which ones are open in your area so that you’re ready in case of an emergency.

Symptoms to look for:

Vomiting or Diarrhea
Urinating more frequently
Hair Loss or itchy skin
Stiffness, lameness or difficulty with rising
Coughing
Lack of Appetite or Decreased Activity
If you notice any of these symptoms, get your pet in for a check up. Many times pet medication will take care of the problem, however any of these symptoms could be a more serious condition.

Remember your pets can’t dial 911!

Our Passion For Pets

Tuesday, April 4, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

animal-lawToday we treat our pets better than they did in the past. My grandparents believed that a cats purpose was to catch mice. They were not allowed in the house but were allowed in the basement. They served a specific purpose and were not a part of the family. Thank goodness things have changed and people love their animals more now than ever and consider them an important part of their families. K9puppydogs.com has put together a list of dog and animal rights. Most would agree that these make sense in today’s weird world.

Dog Rights – Animal Right Law
Dog Rights are clear, and the relationships between owners and dogs have evolved greatly; now they are qualitative as well as quantitative. Dogs are treated better now than they used to and their possession has extended to all the social classes. Today there are numerous associations and foundations that look after the respect of these animals.
Universal Declaration of the Animal Right Law
Animal Dog Right 1
All animals are born the same before life and have the same rights of existence.
Animal Dog Right 2
Every animal has the right to be respected.
The human cannot have the right of killing other animals or exploiting them, violating this right. He has the obligation of placing his knowledge at the animal’s service.
All animals have the right to the attention, care and protection by humans.
Animal Dog Right 3
No animal should be submitted to acts of cruelty.
If the death of an animal is necessary, it must be instant, painless and will not present anxiety for the victim.
Animal Dog Right 4
Every animal that belongs to a wild species has the right to live freely in its own natural habitat and can reproduce freely as well.
Animal Dog Right 5
Every animal that belongs to a species that has traditionally lived in the human’s environment has the right to live and grow at its own rhythm and in the conditions of life and freedom that belong to its species.
Any modification of such rhythm or conditions imposed by the man with mercantile ends is contrary of this right.
Animal Dog Right 6
Any animal that has chosen the man as its partner has the right that the duration of its life is according to its natural life span.
The abandonment of an animal is a cruel and degrading act.
Animal Dog Right 7
All working animals have the right or a reasonable limitation of time and work intensity, and a nourishing alimentation and rest.
Animal Dog Right 8
The experimentation with animals that implies the physical or psychological suffering is incompatible with the animal rights, even if we deal with medical experiments, scientific, commercial, etc.
Animal Dog Right 9
When an animal is raised for alimentation it must be nourished, installed, transported and sacrificed. The motive must not be anxiety or pain.
Animal Dog Right 10
No animal must be exploited for the spreading of the human. Animal exhibitions and spectacles are not compatible with the dignity of the animal.
Animal Dog Right 11
Every act that implies the death of an animal without necessity is biocide, a crime against life.

Every act that implies the death of a large number of wild animals is genocide, a crime against the species.
The contamination and destruction of a natural habitat lead us to genocide.
Animal Dog Right 13
A dead animal must be treated with respect.
The scenes of violence in which animals are the victims should be prohibited in theaters and television, except those that are made to show the violations of the animal’s rights.
Animal Dog Right 14
The protection organisms and safe guarding of the animals should be represented at a governmental level. The rights of the animal must be defended by the law, just like the human rights.

Pets With Dry Skin

Sunday, April 2, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

dogscratchingI suffered from dry skin the winter and it drove me nuts!

We’re not the only ones who suffers from dry skin in the winter. When the heat comes on more frequently in the house, your pet may become itchy. Unless your dog or cat is continually scratching himself, dry skin is usually not a serious health issue but you can’t just wash the problem away. Bathing your pet can make the problem worse. If you do need to shampoo your pet, make sure that you apply a moisturizer after. A moisturizer is affective in treating the symptoms of dry, itchy skin but the underlying source of the problem is probably dry air. A humidifier at home can help keep your pet more comfortable, and you may even benefit from it as well.

Vomiting in Older Cats

Saturday, April 1, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

catvomitAs I mentioned a few days ago, my older cat Molly has kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. She has been vomiting almost every day now for about five days. Vomiting is common in geriatric cats with kidney disease. I am now getting very concerned. She is still eating and drinking normally but I need to get to the bottom of her vomiting.

There are many causes of vomiting in cats. Pet MD has detailed information on this subject. The following is provided by Pet MD.

There are so many possibilities for this condition that determining a cause for chronic vomiting may take some time. You will need to cooperate with your veterinarian in trying to pinpoint if there is anything related to your cat’s background or habits that might account for it.

Your veterinarian will begin by determining whether your cat is actually vomiting or just regurgitating (i.e., whether it is based in the stomach, or not). You will want to pay close attention to the pattern of your cat’s vomiting so you can give a thorough description of the symptoms, as well as how soon after eating the vomiting occurs. Your veterinarian will ask you to describe the appearance of the vomit, and what your cat looks like when it vomits.

If your cat is retching, and heaving from the belly, it is probably vomiting. The food that is in the vomit will be partially digested and somewhat liquid. A yellow fluid called bile will normally be present along with the expelled stomach contents.

If the cat is regurgitating, it will lower its head and the food will be expelled without a lot of effort. The food will be undigested and probably will be tubular in shape, more often solid and covered with slimy mucus than not.

Your cat may try to re-eat the regurgitated food. It is a good idea to keep a sample of the expelled content, so that when you take your cat to see the veterinarian, an examination can be made to determine whether the material is vomit or regurgitation, and what might be present in the contents.

Your veterinarian will need to know about your cat’s activities, habits, and surrounding environment, as well as what medicines your pet may be taking. Factors that are significant and must be followed-up on immediately are instances when the vomit has granule-like granules in it (may appear like coffee grounds). These granules are indicative of blood being present in the vomit. Fresh blood in the vomit will often indicate stomach ulcers or cancer.

If your cat has a fever, a stomachache, jaundice, anemia, or masses in the stomach, your veterinarian will be able to make a more specific diagnosis.

Remember, your pets count!
