Kitty Frustration

Sunday, January 15, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

catpillAs you know from previous posts, my 17 1/2 year old cat has kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. I’ve been giving her her thyroid pill wrapped in a pill pocket. She’s been taking it with ease….until yesterday. At this point, Molly will not take her pill at all and I’m very frustrated. She’s drinking and eating normally but I am going to have to force the pill down by manually opening her mouth which I did not want to do because it is very difficult and will cause her stress. Cats are very finicky and unpredictable. I am in the process of figuring out a solution to this current dilemma and will keep you posted. A cat can suddenly change their behavior. So if you just adopted a cat, expect the unexpected!

The Energetic Border Collie

Friday, January 13, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

bordercollieThe Border Collie is a very energetic dog that loves to play and work. It’s body is slightly longer than it’s tail. This dog is very intelligent and very aware of it’s surroundings. This is one of the hardest working dogs who thrives on praise from it’s owners. They are among the leaders in most of the competitive sports that they perform. Farmers love them because they were originally bred as a farm hand. They need ample exercise and long walks on a strong dog leash. The Border Collie will get along with children and other dogs however, they can show some aggression towards other dogs of the same sex if you are not giving them 100% leadership. They should not be trusted with small non – canine pets. Many Border Collies will get along well with family cats. This breed should be very well socialized as a puppy. To keep them totally happy, they need consistent leadership, extensive exercise and some kind of job to occupy their minds. If you allow them to take over without enough socialization and both mental and physical exercise, they can be very reactive and sound sensitive making them a poor choice with families with children. This breed lives for serving you all the time. If you are not going to be dedicated in making sure they get lots of physical and mental exercise then I would not recommend adopting one. They are not your typical “sit at home” dog.

An Important Fact on Dog and Cat Vaccinations!!!!

Thursday, January 12, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

dangerI was at school yesterday having lunch in the teachers lounge. We started taking about our pets. One teacher said that her beloved dog passed away a few weeks ago. We then started talking about the reasons why the nine year old dog passed so quickly. The teacher indicated that she took her pet to the vet (the same Vet that I take my cat Molly). The pet had a minor condition which was being treated. The Vet asked the owner when was the last time her dog was vaccinated. The vet then proceeded to give the dog a rabies vaccination. Her beloved pet got very sick and passed away a few days later!dogvaccination

BOTTOM LINE:  While maintaining your pets good health is a top priority, we must also be aware that many animal hospitals (as many other doctors and institutions in the medical profession) are very greedy and will insist on certain treatments that are not necessary. In this teachers case, her dog did not need a rabies vaccination. In fact NEVER give a pet a vaccination if they have an underlying condition. My cats live indoors, they are both up in years and I will never allow any of them to get any vaccinations anymore!

Be careful when selecting a vet. Do your homework and ask others in the area who own pets about their experiences and opinions of the vets and animal hospitals in your area. I will switch my vet from the Animal Hospital in Lewes, Delaware to the one in Rehoboth Beach.

Never Feed You Cat These Human Foods

Monday, January 9, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

catburgerSometimes we think that our kitties can eat everything that we eat. This is not true and their are some foods that you should not give your cat at all.

  1. Garlic and onions -Garlic and onions contain chemicals that can damage red blood cells in cats and dogs. Cooking these foods does not reduce their potential toxicity, because they contain organosulfoxides. Make sure you carefully read food labels; fresh, cooked and/or powdered garlic and/or onions can be dangerous for pets even in small doses.
  2. Uncooked Eggs-Cats need significantly more protein than dogs because of species differences in protein metabolism. However, raw eggs may expose them to salmonella or lead to an inflamed pancreas, known as pancreatitis. It’s safe to serve your kitty cooked eggs — but only on occasion and only in small amounts.
  3. Bones –Because bones can splinter, they can cause a cat to choke as well as block the intestinal tract. If a bone becomes an intestinal obstruction, it is a true emergency that may require surgery.
  4. Fat Trimmings –Although cats need certain essential amino acids found only in meat, feeding fat trimmings is not a safe way to try to provide them. Feeding your feline such fat can lead to gastrointestinal upset and even pancreatitis.
  5. Caffeinated Drinks – Caffeinated drinks can cause a fast heart beat in cats. Always avoid them.

For more information on foods hazardous to cats, visit the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center website. And keep the organization’s phone number — 888-426-4435 — handy in the event of an emergency.

Make Sure Your Dog Is Prepared For The Snow!

Saturday, January 7, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

dogsnowIt’s a major snowstorm here on Delmarva today and I’m sure that there many people experiencing cabin fever even our best friends. Dogs love frolicking in the snow. It’s great to take them outside to run and play in the snow but there are a few things that you should remember. First of all, make sure that they have their dog boots on. There’s lots on salt on the roadways which can really irritate the under pads of your dog’s paws. Also, make sure that your dog is nice and warm and is wearing his coat especially if you have a small dog! Limit the amount of time spent outdoors but 15 -20 minutes should be fine! Enjoy this time with your best friend. I’m sure that he really appreciates it too.snowy-day

2017 Best Dog Crate Guide

Friday, January 6, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

dogbroke-hpgI can’t stress enough how important it is to make sure that you have a very durable dog crate, especially if your best friend travels with you a lot. There many instances where a strong dog breaks out of his crate while traveling. This can be very dangerous for both the dog and driver. If you own a strong dog, that is excitable in the car, this crate will do the trick and safely keep your pet safe and secure.

A heavy duty escape proof dog crate is a must if you have a large powerful dog that will happily destroy, chew, or find another way to escape from a regular kennel.

You need one that is gorilla tough and virtually indestructible. We’ve reviewed several of the best heavy duty dog crates to best fit a range of budgets. The escape proof dog crate comes in various sizes and is available at Amazon.

The Extra Large Maine Coon Cat

Thursday, January 5, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

mainecoonThey are known for their thick coat and raccoon type tail. A full grown Maine Coon cat can weight between 15 and 20 pounds. Another very large domestic cat is the Savannah, a cross between a domestic cat and a small wild cat. A breeding program for the Savannah cat is still in its’ infancy as male Savannahs’ tend to be sterile to the four and fifth generation. This is a sleek elegant cat with an exotic look. The Rag Doll cat is also large and muscular. Males can weight 20 pounds or more! This cat is quiet and very friendly and is often called the “dog of cats.” If you are lucky enough to own any of these cats, you will know how gentle they can be. You will also know that you may have to buy extra large cat accessories such as cat-savannah cat beds!

Cats Can Be True Companions

Molly with me as I write this blog!

Molly with me as I write this blog!

Many people think cats are totally independent creatures who only live to be fed. This is simply not true. True, some cats have different personalities and prefer to be by themselves. My younger cat Millie enjoys sleeping in a quiet place and is not a lap cat. She does meow for attention. She loves to be brushed, and pet and loves to play with her toys but she will not sit on our laps. Molly, on the other hand will not leave my side. She is with me all the time, and loves climbing on me wherever I am. Although she is not friendly to other people, she has bonded very closely to me and has been with me for over 17 1/2 years. Cats are different than dogs but if you’re a true cat lover, you will know that your cat loves you as much as you love her!

Energetic Dogs

Sunday, January 1, 2017
posted by Jim Murphy

energeticdogsDogs that need the most exercise are breeds that were developed to work long hours for a living such as herding dogs and bird dogs. Among these hard working types are Border Collies. Labrador Retrievers, German Short hair Pointers, Jack Russell Terriers and Dalmatians. They are all frisky, inquisitive and always ready to go. They practically jump into their dog leashes. High energy dogs will match up best with high energy people. Owners that are willing to seek out activities that are challenging to their high energy friends. Theses dogs need consistent training, firm discipline and lots of exercise. So if you are not a high energy person, then choose a dog at the opposite end of the energy spectrum.
