Your Cats Vision…If Looks Could Kill!

Monday, March 21, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

cateyeIf you stare at your cat and blink, there’s a good chance that she will blink back. I believe that one way that cats communicate is with their eyes. In shelters, if you blink very slowly at a feral cat, it usually calms them down. Cats can use their eyes to intimidate prey or even each other. When my cat Mollie sits and stares at my younger cat Millie, Millie will dash across the room and hide. Cats have excellent peripheral vision. You get up at night and are stumbling for the light switch but your cat is navigating around the furniture and enjoying her cat food without any problem. They have vertical irises and excellent night vision. Sometimes my cat will start to pounce on the floor. I see nothing but they see a tiny bug moving very fast through the carpet. We may have better color vision, but cats can detect motion much better than us. Cats also have a third eyelid which protects their eyes as they stalk prey under branches and underbrush. This eyelid is on the inside corner of the eye.

It’s not completely certain which colors a cat can see best but cats do have beautiful eyes and many times people will choose a cat based on the color of their eyes. So why is your cat so good at catching that bug or cat toy? That’s because of it’s excellent eyesight and ability to detect motion much better than humans.

Beware of The Swoop!

HAWKSYesterday, I opened the door and saw two large hawks, circling very low above our house. My cats were safe and warm indoors. If you have a small dog, don’t leave him alone in the yard on warm spring days. Danger lurks overhead! Instead, get some dog toys, a dog leash and take him to the park where he can play and you can keep a close eye on him. I know I’ve written about this before but this is a real issue. Small animals have been gone in an instance when a hawk makes his final swoop!  Don’t take the chance. I sometimes let my cats on the porch or deck on warm summer days but they are never left out alone. If I see a hawk, they are taken inside to safety immediately. Don’t take chances, use your common sense.

Puppy Accidents

Sunday, March 20, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

guiltpupSome puppies get so excited at playtime or when people come through the door that they urinate on the floor. There’s no time get his dog leash on and take him out! So keep a supply of pet stain removal products on hand. Even well trained dogs can exhibit this behavior. As your puppy grows and gains more confidence, the problem with overactive urination usually goes away. Unless you accidentally reinforce the behavior. If your dog has accidents when you walk through the door and your veterinarian has ruled out any medical causes for this problem, do not scold your pup for his behavior but don’t reward him with dog treats for it either. If you console your dog after he pees on the floor, you are sending a message that his action is acceptable. Instead be “low key” about it and ignore your dog’s excitement and wait until he’s calm to pet him

Do Litter Box Types Matter To A Cat?

Saturday, March 19, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

catboxLitter boxes probably look more or less the same to us. We can purchase a self cleaning litter box, a regular box, a large box, smaller one etc. but the type of litter box does matter to a cat. Jackie Neilson, a Veterinary Behaviorist in Portland, Oregon says that cats do prefer litter boxes with certain amenities. Jackies’ research shows that many cats prefer clay based clumping litter to other kinds. Cats also like their litter box to smell nice. Carbon is the top choice for odor control. Most cats like their litter boxes roomy so they can dig and turn around comfortably. The bigger, the better but each cat has its preferences. You should find out the products that your cat likes best. If a cat likes its’ litter box it won’t find another one like a cat bed or a carpet to go on. So observe your cat and determine his likes and dislikes and you’ll never have to worry about any “accidents.”

How The Spoil A Cat

Saturday, March 19, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

CATFRIGAs you know I am a cat spoiler. Both of my kitties are very spoiled and get just about whatever they want. My older cat Molly is now sitting in the kitchen looking up at the refrigerator waiting for “dad” to get up and pull something out that she may enjoy. Funny thing is that I just gave her cat food for the day. She didn’t care much for it so she coaxed me into giving her some of her fresh chicken treats from the refrigerator. Apparently, she still is not satisfied and is still sitting there looking up at the counter where her cat treats are! I guess I’ll have to get my butt off of this comfortable chair and give her some cat treats. This was a lesson on how to really spoil your cat!

Dog Separation Anxiety

Friday, March 18, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogseratateI’m sure that you’ve had this experience if you own a dog and don’t keep him in is dog carrier or dog crate while you’re gone. You come home to find your dog at the window barking up a storm! When your dog is home alone and starts barking, he could be barking a things outside or he may be just upset because you’re gone. Victoria Voight,an Animal Behavorist in Pomona, California suggests that you turn on a thirty minute tape when you leave the house and then listen to the tape when you get back. She says that if you hear the dog start walking around and whining and barking or knocking things over, he probably has separation anxiety. Dogs have to be acclimated slowly to being alone. Start by leaving for only a minute or two then gradually work your way toward longer intervals. Leave his favorite dog toys around. If the problem doesn’t get better seek professional help.

Birds and Cats

Friday, March 18, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

CATBIRDBirds are great pets but if you have a cat, watch out! Birds are cat’s natural prey and even having that beautiful parakeet in the decorative bird cage near the window can put both the bird cage and the bird in danger. Cats are clever critters. Of course they have the ability to jump high but they also have the ability to really upset your little birds life. The cat even open the cage if it’s not closed securely. I’ve heard of an instance where a cat climbed on top of a dresser, jump on the bird cage next to the dresser, knocked the bird cage down and then proceeded to open the cage and let the bird out. Luckily, this was a smart little bird. He quickly flew onto the bed and hid beneath the pillows! Keep bird cages out of your feline friends reach. Make sure they are in a room that’s not accessible to your cat.

Disposable Cat Litter Boxes

Thursday, March 17, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

DISPOSABLKITTYDogs can be walked easily and virtually anywhere but our feline friends need a special place to do their business. If you are traveling with your cats and have to stay in a pet friendly hotel or motel, you may want to buy a few disposable cat litter boxes. You can usually find these in the supermarket. They are plastic or cardboard litter boxes that are usually filled with litter that can be easily thrown away at any time. Disposable litter boxes are inexpensive and a great way to make sure that your cat has a place to go when you’re on the road. They are great even if you’re not traveling or if you have multiple cats. All you do is toss when necessary. There’s no messy cleanup!

Merca in Pets

Thursday, March 17, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

dogcatvetYou can feed your dog the best dog food or your cat the highest quality cat food to keep him healthy but there are ways that your pet can become very ill.    Merca is a staff bacteria that is resistant to common antibiotics. It can start as an abcess or skin infection but it gets more serious as it gets into the bloodstream and organs. It’s important that you know that merca impacts both humans and pets and can be passed back and forth. If it shows up in your pets, don’t assume that they are the only ones that are affected. Armando Howett, Coordinator of the veterinary public health program at Ohio State University advices both doctors and veterinarians to work together to screen, treat and manage the illness in the household. Good hygene is your best prevention. Wash your hands and keep wounds covered to prevent infection. If you notice any symptoms on your pet, don’t assume that over the counter pet medication will solve the problem. Get your pet to a vet right away and be aware that the infection can spread to you.

The Adorable Mini Dachshund

Wednesday, March 16, 2016
posted by Jim Murphy

MINIDASHCUNDA miniature Dachshund may be small but he has plenty of energy. Along with long walks, you can help train his energy with some lively games. There’s nothing more enjoyable for your mini dog than playing fetch. Retrieving balls and squeaky dog toys is his idea of nirvana. It is also a good opportunity for you to teach him the command “drop it.” He also likes to play “tug” but make sure it’s not too rough and you are the one who starts and ends the game. Playing hide and seek with him is also fun as long as he already knows how to sit. Try teaching him a few new tricks like “hi five” or “take a bow.” Make sure you have those dog treats handy! If you take the time to play with your mini Dachshund, he will have a fit mind and body. It will also keep him more relaxed and happier. He will really enjoy sleeping in his dog bed at the end of a long day of play!
