Dogs and cats should be kept indoors during the very cold weather. It’s a common belief that because of their fur, dogs and cats are more resistant to the cold than humans. This is just not true!Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside. Dog sweaters and dog coats are necessary on these cold winter days.   Long haired breeds and thick-coated dog breeds, such as huskies and other dogs bred for colder climates, are more tolerant of cold weather; but no pet should be left outside for long periods of time in below-freezing weather. A warm car can be great to transport pets in frigid temperatures but it can be deadly if a cat gets under to hood to keep warm. It’s a good idea to bang on the hood before starting your car in cold temperatures. Always check your pets paws frequently to see whether they are cracked or bleeding. This can happen in extreme cold. The salt on the sidewalks and roads are great for melting ice but are very painful and wreak havoc on your dog’s paws.

Use your common sense. Dogs must go for walks but make sure they are bundled up and only are outside for very short periods of time during these frigid winter days.
