I live in a very strange apartment complex  in Edgewater, New Jersey. This complex consists of two mid rise buildings and townhouses. The building has a no pet policy but does allow cats. I have two. There was once a vote to allow dogs, but the homeowners voted it down. Why?  I must say this. I’ve been living in this complex for 15 years and outside of my two neighbors who live on each side of me and several others who also live there, I’ve never seen a more unfriendly bunch of people. Some will not say one word to you.   They won’t greet you in the lobby or even nod in the elevator, hold the door open for you or do anything to show that they’re human. They also seem to really dislike animals.

A few days ago, as I was walking to my car, I saw a lady walking a small dog on the property. (What a pleasant surprise!) I smiled at her and her dog and she said to me. “It’s a pleasant surprise to see your smile.” People who see me walking my dog usually scoul at me, make faces and say that no dogs are allowed on the property. This woman lives in the townhouses and said that she has permission to keep the dog. She has been living in the complex  for 25 years and agrees that she has never seen such unfriendly people!

I said that I strongly believe that people who really don’t like pets have a problem. They are usually extremely self centered. This is my opinion from my  experience with them. It’s very sad that there are so many animals needing adoption and a good home and so many self centered people who have no time for a pet. God forbid they have get home from work before 7PM in order to walk their dog!!!!

It’s a pleasure at my home in Delaware. Most people here have pets and they are extremely friendly and outgoing. They look after one another. You can really see the distinct difference between these people and the ones at Grand Cove. It’s like night and day!

On one final note, if I offend anyone by this very personal account of my observations, I apologize but I really felt compelled to write this. The world has become a very impersonal place and I’m seeing a pattern of self centered people caught up in the whirlwind of their careers who have no time for pets or other people.  Compassionate animal lovers are usually also very caring of their pets,neighbors, friends and family.
