Myths About Black Cats

Saturday, October 25, 2014
posted by Jim Murphy

BLACK CATIt’s almost Halloween and their are always myths about the poor black cat. Fact: Black cats are beautiful and should be given as much love and attention as other cats. My cat Molly is a black cat and  I’ve never had a closer bond with an animal! FACT: Black cats are only half as likely to be adopted as cats of other colors. This is because people associate black cats with bad luck. The  only bad thing about black cats is that they are the last to get adopted because superstitious people associate them with bad luck…….NONSENSE!  To associate at black cat with bad luck is a myth dating back to the Middle Ages when black cats were associated with witchcraft. ( The Middle Ages was a very weird period in history!) Did you know that many cultures actually worship the black cat?  They were worshiped in Egypt where owning a black cat was thought to bring good luck.

Another myth is that black cats are sacrificed on Halloween. Experts at the ASPCA agree that this is false. However, pranksters and people looking to hurt animals will target any animal, regardless of breed or coat color. I always recommend that you bring all of your pets in on Halloween to keep them safe from the many “nuts” out there!
