FAMILY DOGThe death of a beloved pet is a heartbreaking experience and it’s something that you won’t get over quickly. It’s difficult to tell when you’re ready to get another pet. Some people will only wait a few days or weeks while others will wait months of even years.  First take some time to experience your grief.  It’s normal to be sad, angry and lonely for a while and it’s also okay to feel relieved. If your pet has been suffering, you may feel some relief that he is at peace and no longer suffering. This is perfectly normal. Don’t run out and fill the void right away. If you have another dog, consider the fact that dogs grieve too. A replacement may not be welcome right away. Watch your other pets behavior over the next few weeks. Look at their energy level, eating habits and overall personality. If you feel that they are acting normal, then consider another dog or cat.

If the pet that died was your only pet. Consider some things that you may have wanted to do but didn’t because you didn’t want to leave your pet. Take that trip or renovate your home. Whatever it is, it may help with your grief. Then consider adopting a new pet.  Once you feel that the time is right, then you can begin the process of choosing another dog or cat. Take your time, make sure that it’s a good fit. The new pet will never replace the one that died, but it will give you as much love and affection and it will be another added treasure to your family.
