Core vs. non core vaccines for dogs and cats
Thursday, March 14, 2013
There are a lot more vaccines available today then there were about thirty years ago. It is absolutely necessary that dogs and cats receive the “core” vaccines.
Core Vaccines for dogs are:
- distemper
- parvo
- adenovirus
- rabies
Care Vaccines for cats are:
- Panleukopenia
- Calici
- Herpes
- Rabies
The diseases that these vaccines protect against are very serious. They mortality rate is 60 to 90 percent in young animals. Your kitten or puppy should receive these vaccines very early in life. There are also non-core vaccines. These vaccines are optional. Only certain animals need to get non-core vaccines, as opposed to every animal needing the core vaccines.
Indoor cats need the vaccine for panleukopenia. There are several does that you vet will administer .The last dose should be at 14 to 16 weeks, because by that time the kitten will no longer have the protection passed from the mother cat.
