Getting your cat used to a scratching post

Sunday, March 3, 2013
posted by Jim Murphy

It’s a natural instinct for your cat to scratch but you also need to protect your furniture. One way of doing this is providing alternate surfaces for your cat to scratch on. The scratching post is the most common piece of cat furniture. It’s a great idea to have several of them around your home. The most important characteristic of a scratching post is its weight. If the scratching post feels unsteady or wobbly to your cat, he will not use it. Make sure that any scratching post you intend to build or purchase will be stable enough to present a sturdy scratching surface. The scratching surface must all be tall enough for your cat to fully stretch out. A short scratching post will also not be used by your cat. A large scratching post with a platform on top is great because it serves two purposes. It allows your cat to scratch ad climb.  Some cats prefer to stretch out horizontally. In this case, a  flat scratching surface like a cardboard scratching board is ideal for those cats. In any case, make sure that there are plenty of places where your cat can scratch so that that expensive furniture is not ruined.
