Training a small dog to use a litter box

If you own a small dog that does not take very well to cold and wet weather, you may want to consider training him to use a litter box. Imagine if that meeting at work runs a litter long, you don’t have to worry about your dog having to go out.  Proving a litter box provides your dog with as needed access.  He can use it no matter what time of day or night it is.

Getting your dog to use the litter box may take a few months of training. Always offer positive reinforcement when he uses it, but otherwise the exercise is no different than any other type of doggie potty training.

Use the same techniques for puppies as for adult dogs. Feed and provide water to your dog at several intervals during the day.  Say a command word or phrase like “lets go potty” to tell him to do his business. If you’re training a puppy, they’ll most likely have to go between 5 to 30 minute after eating or drinking.  If you’re training an older dog, look for signs that he needs to go.  He may  whine, pace of sniff.  When he successfully uses the litter box, offer lots of praise and give him a treat.  If you catch him going someplace else, gently scold him and take him to the box. As he uses the box on his own, continue to praise him and slowly decrease his treats.

There, you’ve done it! Now you can breathe a sigh of relief.
