Urinary Tract Infections in Cats
Sunday, October 31, 2010
Urinary tract infections are fairly common in dogs and cats but more common in dogs. Cats can come down with this infection as well. This is known as Feline Urologic Syndrome effecting less than 1% of the overall cat population. The most common cause of this is stones in the urinary tract. If the condition is severe, it can totally block the urinary tract. So what are the symptoms of this condition? Most cats urinate at night when they are most active. The first sign is when they have litter box problems. Signs to look for are:
- Small or no urine at all. Pain is a sign but cats are very tolerant to pain so you may not be able to notice that they are actually in pain.
- Excessive grooming of their genitals especially if they cry while they are doing it. Another tell tail sign is blood in their urine.
- If your cat has stopped urinating inside his box but you notice urine outside of the box, this could be a sign of a urinary tract infection.
If you notice any of these things, get your cat to the vet to be checked out. In most cases, there is pet medication that can cure this condition.
