If your dog has done something naughty when you were out, he might look suspiciously remorseful when you return to the house. Deborah Horowitz, a veterinary behaviorist from St. Louis Missouri says that’s because your dog can anticipate your negative reaction based on previous experiences. She says that what the dog learns when you come home and there’s garbage on the floor or the shoes are chewed up or in my case, the dog water bowl was thrown across the room leaving water all over the floor, that these things are upsetting to you (or me). When these things aren’t there, everything is fine. So your dogs shame faced reaction doesn’t mean that he was walking around feeling guilty all day. It simply shows that he knows what things will upset you.
