Update On Molly

MOLLYAs you know, my 17 year old cat Molly was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and Chronic Renal Failure last December 2015. Since that time, I’ve changed her diet to a lower protein, more moisture one. I also give her a high potent omega oil that I get from Canada.  For her hyperthyroidism, I give her Methimazole. I took her for her blood work yesterday. She gained about one pound and her hyperthyroidism is now in the normal range. We are now reducing the dosage of Methimazole. Unfortunately her creatine level increased from 2.8 in January to 3.7. Her BUN level decreased from 40mg/dl in January to 39 mg/dl. What does this all mean? Basically Molly’s kidney disease has advanced a bit. She is now in stage 3. Kidney disease is a chronic illness and unfortunately there is no cure. My goal is to manage and monitor the disease as long as I can and slow down the progression of the disease. The vet has recommended another brand of prescription cat food low in protein, sodium and phosphate. I will try this and hope that Molly eats it.

The most common presentation of kidney disease is decreased appetite, increased thirst and urination, lethargy, vomiting and weight loss. My long term goal is to give Molly the best quality of life possible. I have been switching cat foods to make sure that molly eats. I always keep her water bowl filled with fresh water and make sure that she drinks. Sometimes I give her a few cat treats although, these are not the best choice for her kidney function.
