Dog Hearing Loss

Tuesday, April 2, 2013
posted by Jim Murphy

If your dog is unresponsive to everyday sounds, does not respond to his name, or  is not phased by loud noises, he is probably suffering from hearing loss.  There are many causes of hearing loss including old age. Your vet will run a complete history of your dog. This includes determining any drugs that may have damaged the ear or caused a chronic ear disease. In younger dogs, it could be a birth defect that caused the condition. Brain disease is a slow, progressive disease of the cerebral cortex and is usually caused by senility or cancer. This causes the brain not to be able to register what the ear can hear.  Your vet may also take a bacterial culture as well as conduct a series of hearing tests to determine the cause.  Many times, there is no treatment to improve your dogs hearing. It’s very important that you’re aware of his problem and can make adjustments where necessary. Remember, your pets count!
